Lietuvos geležinkeliai Group’s freight company LTG Cargo has started transporting coal on the basis of an order made by the Polish state coal importer. The cargo will be transported in special containers from Klaipėda seaport to Trakiškės, then LTG Cargo Polska will ensure transportation to Białystok, and from there the partners will transport coal to Branew in North-West Poland.
This international project is expected to help the country meet its demand for solid fuel.
“Both we and the market in the region are actively diversifying logistics routes and looking for alternative routes that could be used to transport cargo bypassing Russia and Belarus. Poland currently ensures coal imports through the country’s ports. However, increased needs encourage the search for new directions, among which is the transportation of extremely important cargo through Lithuania from the Klaipėda seaport. We prepared the project very quickly – in just a few months. The first train with a load of coal has already left for Poland,” says Eglė Šimė, the head of LTG Cargo.
Currently, LTG Cargo and its partners Innofreight have already gathered the specialised containers and platforms required for the first carriages in the rolling stock for both broad gauge and European gauge. The train will run once a week, and up to 60 specialised containers with coal will be transported in one trip.
For the time being, it is planned to transport about 5 thousand tonnes of coal per month to Poland via the new route. In the future, the company hopes to increase the volume of these carriages, and is also looking for solutions that would allow coal to be transported from the Klaipėda seaport through the Kaunas intermodal terminal.
